Repiping Your Home: Here’s How To Prepare
It may be best to repipe your home for any of a number of reasons, most notably because a major plumbing blowout happened and your system needs to be urgently replaced or less severe issues are occurring much more often than they should and the situation will likely only deteriorate from there.
So, now that you’ve scheduled your repiping with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing and are looking forward to your new pipes, how should you go about preparing your home and yourself for repiping to ensure that the process proceeds as efficiently as possible?
Clean Out Under-Sink Areas
An important area to take note of are sinks and the pipes that are below them. To make sure that things go smoothly here, clear your things out of this space.
Nearby drawers in the area should be fine as is. Unless you are told otherwise, you can normally leave your silverware and other items in them.
Clear Off Relevant Appliances
Any appliances that are connected to your plumbing should not have anything on top of them as our Benjamin Franklin Plumbing specialists may need to move them to get at pipes that are behind or next to them. Examples of these types of appliances can include your washing machine and refrigerator.
Move Some Furniture
If you have any furniture, such as a couch or a bed, that could block our plumber’s access to your pipes, you should move it out of the way if doing so is possible. Simply pushing the furniture away from the wall towards the center of the room should suffice.
Take Care of Valuables
Of course, we’ll take great care at every step of this process, but it may be best to take your valuables to parts of your home that won’t be impacted by this repiping or to another place entirely. Doing so will ensure that any unintentional and unexpected developments won’t affect them.
You may also want to cover larger items that are of importance, such as electronics and furniture, so that they don’t get dusty.
Be Prepared for No Water
A repiping may last a few days, depending on the size of your house and other factors, so you should be prepared to not have access to water for considerable amounts of time. Most importantly, ensure that your drinking-water, shower and toilet needs will be met as we work hard repiping your home.
If we’re unable to provide you with any access to water whatsoever for days, you may want to secure alternate housing. Of course, this is a scenario that we avoid if at all possible.
Prepare Your Basement or Crawlspace
If you have a basement, note that our Benjamin Franklin Plumbing plumbers will need access to any pipes that are there or adjacent to this area. As a result, you should clear out everywhere that’s located below and next to these pipes. Also keep in mind that this area will likely get wet during the repiping process, so you may want to remove what’s stored in your basement to protect it. Those who have a crawlspace should, in nearly all cases, clear it out entirely to ensure that our specialists can get to the relevant pipes.
Clean Out Bathroom-Adjacent Closets
If you have a closet on the other side of the wall from a bathtub or shower, you should clear it out in advance of our arrival.
Note the Noise
While we’re replacing your pipes, we’ll need to make loud noises from time to time, so keep that in mind as well, especially if you work from home or have young children or sensitive pets.
Other Notes
Additional things that you can do simplify this process is ensuring that there are no items on your bathroom and kitchen floors, toiletries have been removed, your shower curtain has been taken down and sinks, areas inside and around your dishwasher and cabinets that are next to relevant walls are clear. Simply put, pay close attention to areas in your home that are near pipes.
